There is a recurring theme in the reviews of this restaurant: overpriced and not a return-type establishment. I could not agree more. The atmosphere is actually quite enjoyable, we sat at the bar and there were ample seats, flat screens, and KENO. I started the meal off with the lobster bisque which was quite good. There were pieces of real lobster meat which was a very nice touch, but make sure you leave off the sambuca cream (blech!) And at $7 for a small cup it better be good. For lunch I had the wedge salad and my fiancee had the spicy chicken sandwich. The wedge, which was $10, consisted of a quarter wedge of iceberg lettuce topped with two strips of generic, pre-cut bacon and a few halved grape tomatoes on the side. The dressing, which was touted as "Danish bleu cheese", was as boring as blue cheese dressing gets. The spicy chicken sandwich was neither as far as I could tell: not spicy and questionable chicken. The meat was obviously frozen, pre-cooked gray chicken matter. The fries were unique and good at the same time. Service was good, albeit it was a very slow lunch. To make a long story short, don't bother walking off Main St. to go to the Gate House. Save your energy and money and go elsewhere.

My girlfriend and I were looking for a place to eat for dinner. After contemplating the many establishments on the island, we decided to try the Gatehouse. We were slightly disappointed with the restaurant as a whole. I guess we were expecting more. The ambiance was very "touristy". The food was all right. We both ordered the 3 course meal. My girlfriend ordered the Caesar salad as a starter, pretzel crusted whitefish for a main, and the creme brulee for dessert. The Caesar was good. The whitefish was okay. With regard to the Creme Brulee, my girlfriends said that I made a better one. I ordered the avocado chicken egg rolls to start, the NY Strip Steak for main, and the strawberry cheesecake for dessert. I liked everything on the menu except for the cheesecake. It seemed like it was a little dry and crumbly. Overall the food wasn't good but it wasn't bad either. I wouldn't go back to this place though. I would probably try the restaurant located in the Stonecliffe, the Woods, or Goodfellow's.

I wish I could split this review, instead I have to settle for middle of the road overall. Our server, Hattie, was fantastic! She handled herself extremely well with a group of boisterous women taking time off from work to have some fun. Very professional and pleasant. I liked this place better when it was the Outpost. I really missed having the steel drum playing and the menu was just so-so. My chicken salad sandwich was okay but nothing to write home about.

The roast beef sandwich was great, French fries had a nice crust. Kobe burger was good but a little greasy and too sweet. Would eat here again.

Went here for lunch before checking in to the Grand Hotel. There was nothing vegan on the menu, but with a couple modifications we ended up with the hummus appetizer with veggies instead of naan and the roasted veggie sandwich sans bun. Both were pretty good. I found the beer selection lacking, so stuck with water.

My favorite of "the Grand" restaurants, although that is not saying much for me. It is not as pretentious and all the servers actually understand English. We ate outside and that was really nice. I had the whitefish, and it was really good. I also had the Cherry Martini (since, heck, we were in Mackinac) and boy was that puppy strong! My husband had the rosemary chicken, plain, which was made gluten free. It was actually the only Grand restaurant that he felt truly safe ordering something gluten free. And, he did not get sick after this meal. I had the Grand Pecan ball at the end...that was good, but way too big for one person...although I did give it the ole college try :)

Poor service. Came in at 3:30pm on a Saturday. No one greeted us or seated us

Best Bar on Mackinac Island. Feels like Cheers!

I'm sitting here at the gate house now. My turkey club just arrived with untoasted bread, skimpy on the fries. My friend had hummus and pita. The pita is deep fried. The only highlight was a great bloody mary

Located before they charge you $10 just to walk on the premises of the hotel grounds, the Gatehouse is a nice, not spectacular restaurant. Staff was good, not great. Food just about the same. A nice, not particularly memorable meal with a limited menu that was a bit pricey. $17 for a Wagyu burger? The Chuckwagon has better down the hill for half of that. If you want to rub elbows with the beautiful people though, I guess it would get an extra star for the plastics of it all.

So there are quite a few restaurants on the Island and we didn't know where to go. Given our prior dining experience in the City, we decided to not go to someplace fancy because we would just end up disappointed and broke. On the way to the Grand Hotel, we passed by this place, which looked nice and seemed to be decently priced (everything is just overpriced on this tourist trap place). My little sister was able to get the kids menu and man was that a great deal! She got a soft drink, soup, mac and cheese and dessert for 8 dollars! I got the trapper chicken sandwich, which turned out to be quite good and was able to change my fries to fresh chips with no hassle. The BF got the gate house burger which was quite massive but it cost $15, which I think is a bit overpriced. There arent too many options on the menu but my older sister and mom were able to get pasta made that wasn't on the menu so that was nice of the restaurant to accomodate and they said the pasta was good. They also had some lunch specials on a separate menu but I didn't find it that special. Overall, its an OK place... if I ever go back to Mackinaw Island, I would try somewhere else though (not a place I need to return to) and its still a bit overpriced.

Restaurant has a great bar and patio. Ended up ordering the bacon burger with fries. The burger patty was clearly cooked frozen and was very dry. Considering that the burger cost $15+, it was extremely disappointing. One of the worst burgers I have ever had at a restaurant, especially considering the price. Others in my party were also disappointed with their entrees. Would recommend going anywhere else on the island if looking for a burger (first choose would be the Chuckwagon). If this place had good food, it would definitely be a great Mackinac Island destination. Great view of the Grand Hotel, a nice patio / bar, and a refreshing break from the madness on the strip do make it a great place to grab a cocktail, though.

Good pub food and nice outdoor seating (albeit not on the water). Blue cheese burger cooked perfectly with a rich blue cheese sauce and sweet caramelized onions.

We had the Cobb salad and it was fresh but small. It came with homemade ranch dressing. I had the Cuban sandwich and it was pretty good and it came with homemade chips which were great. My husband had the chicken sandwich and it was a nice sized portion and he loved it. The beers were cold. I would have given it another star but the fact that the kids meals are $10 and are things like Mac and cheese or a grilled cheese annoyed me. The waiter was just ok. We ordered the salad as an appetizer to share and it came with the food.

Food was delicious, but the service left something to be desired. I would definitely return to the Gate House for lunch. They have a nice patio.

Didn't love it. We stopped here for a very late lunch as the Grand hotel did not have anything open at 3:30 pm. The server was friendly and quick. The food not so great. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich and it wasn't very good, gave me a terrible stomach ache later that evening. My niece, who's 4, ordered the peanut butter and jelly sandwich (most expensive ever at $7.50) she thoroughly enjoyed it stating it was the best she had ever had! Unless I had a kid craving a PBJ I wouldn't go back.

Had a very nice dinner here. Food was good. The cocktails were highly mixed in quality. We recommend avoiding the electric lilac. Way. Too. Flowery.
(4)Tim S.
I liked it better when it was the Outpost, but that is just due to the memories. Good food and a reasonably attentive staff, if you are looking for a place off the main drag this is a good alternative.

This restaurant is owned by the legendary Grand Hotel. However, it's certainly not as pretentious as the Grand (no entry fee, no dress code). Still, the restaurant didn't really didn't impress me too much. I ordered their special 1918 root beer, which was tasty, but warm-- yuck. I also tried the boneless buffalo wing appetizer-- it was super spicy, but good. For my entree, I went with the bbq pork sandwich. The meat itself is served between two pieces of cornbread, which makes it a little overwhelming. It would probably be better served open faced. Also, the pork was a little too salty. All in all, while the experience wasn't bad, there are so many restaurants on the island, that if I went back, I'd probably try someplace else.

Had a great fresh piece of white fish with couscous and steamed vegetables. You can get a burger anywhere on the island, and I won't blame you if you do. Trust the fish, it's clean, never frozen, and was cooked to perfection. I sat inside today at the bar and joined friends during the Mackinac Policy Conference. Great sit, great staff, and great food. I will eat here again for sure. Enjoy.

The food tasted great! Sadly it was gone in three bites. The appetizers were especially tiny. Bottom line - not worth the prices.

I went here with my fiancé and another couple. We started with the pretzel and cheese dip, as well as the calamari appetizer. The pretzels were light and the inside and had a nice brown texture on the outside, it paired well with the melted cheddar cheese and the bacon-flavored cheese it came with. The calamari was also cooked very well with a nice bread batter. It came with two dipping sauces which were average, however, the calamari was so good that it only really needed lemon juice for a nice flavor. I was very impressed with all four meals that were ordered. I ordered the Cajun flavored fettuccine and cream sauce, which included hey variety of seafood. It had a strong rich garlic flavor, with the mussels and shrimp being cooked with a delicate touch. I fiancé ordered the whitefish and quinoa main course. Whitefish was cooked perfectly the cream sauce added to it, and the quinoa had a very good flavor and was a nice pairing with the dish. Asparagus was also included in the dish and was fresh. Overall all four in our party were satisfied with the main courses and appetizers which was very surprising, considering how many bad meals I've had on Mackinac Island. If there is anything I could improve on it's the sauces that went with the calamari, and it may be advisable to make the summer sangria stronger.

We had dinner there recently and found the food was not very good. Ordered the whitefish which was a very small half filet which tasted old. Also too much sauce which would have coved up the flavor of good whitefish. Very disappointed as we have eaten there in the past and the food was much better.

Great place! Nice patio to people watch from. The food is outstanding and the service is outstanding too.

Great place to sit outside and watch people. Lots of outside tables with umbrellas as well as indoor dinning. The former French Outpost Restuarant was taken over by the Grand Hotel some years ago and the change was a great one. Located at the base of the long up hill street that leads to the Grand, it's a great spot to take it all in. Major foot, bike and horse and carriage traffic are all in view as well as the magnificent Grand Hotel. Food and drink selections are plentiful so all will be pleased. The wait staff is Grand Hotel trained so you always have good service. Nightly live entertainment too. It's a must do when visiting the island.

Quality service and food you'd expect from the Grand, without the pretentiousness. They have plenty of outdoor seating which is nice during the summer months. You can enjoy the scenery, and watch all the horses and buggies go by. If you're looking for a fine dining experience where you can mock the peasants who can't afford to eat there, this is NOT the place for you. It's your typical American comfort food menu, nothing fancy. But everything was delicious and presented very well. Not to mention the enormous portions! The pretzel bites with cheese sauce are a must for an appetizer. The trapper chicken sandwich was also delicious. And for a beer I'd recommend the Bells Oberon, a locally brewed refreshing pale wheat ale. This definitely seemed like one of the best options on the island. A little bit removed from the craziness of the main street which was nice.

Amazing Chicken quesidilla. The fish sandwich and the chicken panini were also quite good. Service was prompt, friendly, and helpful when deciding between a few different options. Great outdoor atmosphere. Would have liked to try some of the cocktails, maybe next time.

Yummy Veggie Panini with goat cheese, zucchini, yellow squash, onions, peppers and crispy fries. Lunching outside lunch is tasty on a beautiful day. Jeff loved his Greek Chicken Wrap. Then we topped it off with Grand Pecan Ball, vanilla ice cream covered in pecan on bed of hot chocolate fudge. Its part of Grand Motel so I guess one would expect grand food. Service was good Done

Went for lunch, was wonderful. I had the best Cob Salad ever! My son loved his Turkey Melt with great crispy fries!! Daughter enjoyed her Wedge Salad. We enjoyed the meal and eating outside.

Quality if food is not good. Don't eat here. Chicken bacon sandwich, fake bacon, fake spongy chicken , florescent orange chewy cheese. Thumbs down.
